MARIE LATHROP[]
Marie Lathrop was the daughter of rancher Jim Lathrop. She lived on her fathers ranch in the town of Leadville, Texas with her brother Bobby. They were soon terrorized by outlaws led by Blast Barrows, who was forcing ranchers off their land. Barrows was smitten by Marie and asked her to marry him but she refused. To pressure her he shot her then boyfriend Charlie. Marie rushed Charlie to local doctor Matthew Masters. When Barrows returned, Marie’s father stormed off to stop him, Marie called Masters a coward for not willing to fight. Marie's stinging words prompted Matthew to create the masked identity of the Black Rider after he learned that Barrows and his gang intended to burn the Lathrop ranch to the ground. The Rider managed to save the Lathrop’s ranch and Marie from being kidnapped by Barrows. Marie was instantly smitten by the Black Rider. She tolerated Masters, as he was a good doctor, but still considered him a coward and refused his request to court her. Masters instead began romancing Marie as the Black Rider.
